MIRI CITY (OIL TOWN)
Miri , about 850KM from Kuching, is a modern city in Northern Sarawak with a population of about 250,000. It became a boom town thanks to the discovery of oil in 1910.The orang ulu (upriver people) lives inland at the Kelabit Highlands, Ba Kelalan plateau with respective distinct language, culture and lifestyle. One of them, the Penan people are still semi-nomads practising slash-and-burn cultivation.
Miri is at the doorstep of Sarawak’s natural attractions. The Gunung Mulu National Park, with an UNESCO World Heritage satus is the most impressive of Sarawak’s 15 national parks. Other interesting destinations include Niah National Park,Loagan Bunut National Park and Kelabit Highlands, hard of soft coral for divers.
